The cancellation of the program was decided by the Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives, who believe that citizenship should be the result of a successful integration process, not an incentive for illegal immigration. Although the rest of the citizenship law remains intact, the accelerated program has been rarely used, with only a few hundred of the 300,000 naturalizations in 2024 using this route. Changes in public perception of migration have led to an increase in the popularity of the far-right AfD party.
