According to data published by the industrial association VDMA, German companies in the mechanical engineering sector recorded a decline in exports of 1.8% in 2025 compared to 2024, and adjusted for inflation, the drop was 3.3%.

The total value of exports was 198.5 billion euros. The decline in exports was more pronounced than that of production, which decreased by 2.6% for the third consecutive year. Factors contributing to this situation include American tariffs, increased protectionism, and uncertainties in global markets. Exports to the USA fell by 8%, and those to China by 8.2%. In contrast, exports to Italy, Spain, and the Mercosur bloc showed positive development.

VDMA warns of ongoing difficulties, especially due to high tariffs on oil and aluminum, which affect companies in the sector. It is also estimated that the decline in exports to China will continue, although orders from the eurozone provide some reasons for optimism.
