At the G20 summit in South Africa, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement on the 28-point plan proposed by Donald Trump for Ukraine, ahead of the deadline set by the American president. Merz suggested negotiating a smaller number of points, considering the existing divergences. Discussions began in Geneva between delegates from Ukraine, the USA, and Europe, with the aim of shaping an acceptable peace plan for all parties involved.
Merz emphasized that the plan, which reflects Russian demands, has generated opposition from Ukraine and European allies. He mentioned that it is necessary to transform the document into a viable plan, proposing to reach an agreement on a single point by Thursday. He also highlighted the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine, stressing that trust in Russia has been compromised by the failure to adhere to previous agreements. Merz also rejected the idea of Russia returning to the G8, stating that there is no willingness among G7 members for such a change.
