George Banks, one of the most notorious mass murderers in the USA, died at the age of 83 in the State Correctional Institution Phoenix, Pennsylvania, due to kidney cancer. In 1982, Banks committed a shooting attack that killed 13 people, including five of his children, in Wilkes-Barre. The attack began in the morning of September 25, when he shot three women and five children, then continued to shoot at passersby, causing additional victims.
Banks, a former prison guard and veteran of the U.S. Army, surrendered to the police after a few hours. His trial was marked by arguments related to his mental health, with lawyers claiming he was haunted by delusions related to race. He was found guilty of 12 counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, but the sentence was overturned in 2001, and in 2006 he was declared unfit for execution. His death in prison concludes a tragic story that left a profound mark on the community and the judicial system in the USA.
