Former world champion Gennady Golovkin has been declared the sole candidate for the position of president of World Boxing, set to take over from Boris van der Vorst on November 23, 2025. Van der Vorst announced that he will not run for re-election due to increased demands and years of travel. World Boxing confirmed that an independent committee evaluated the candidacies, and Golovkin was the only one selected.
He won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and was appointed president of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan in 2024. Van der Vorst played a crucial role in expanding World Boxing and in obtaining provisional recognition from the International Olympic Committee, facilitating the reintroduction of boxing at the 2028 Olympic Games.
