Nepal has begun voting in general elections, six months after youth-led protests forced the resignation of the former prime minister. Nearly 19 million voters will decide who will replace the interim government, in the context of a confrontation between traditional politicians and a strong youth movement. Among the candidates are the former Marxist prime minister, a rapper-turned-mayor seeking the youth vote, and the new leader of the Nepali Congress Party.

The protests began as a reaction to a temporary ban on social media, but were fueled by grievances related to corruption and a weak economy. Sushila Karki, the interim prime minister, encouraged voting without fear, and thousands of soldiers and police are deployed at polling centers.

Young candidates promise to address Nepal's economic issues, challenging veteran politicians who claim their experience guarantees stability. In particular, the fight in the Jhapa-5 constituency will be crucial, where former prime minister KP Sharma Oli faces Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician.

Over 3,400 candidates are vying for 165 seats in the House of Representatives, and results will be published within 24 hours for the direct elections, but it may take longer for the proportional representation system. It is estimated that there will not be a clear majority, which could complicate the formation of a coalition government. Voting will end at 5:00 PM.
