At COP30 in Brazil, California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the importance of climate actions, in the absence of Donald Trump and the American federal delegation. Newsom criticized the United States' withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, calling it an "abomination," and promised that a future Democratic president would reintegrate the country into the agreement. He highlighted California's success in the clean energy sector, stating that it would be the fourth-largest economy in the world if it were independent. He also held meetings with Brazilian and German officials, promoting international cooperation in the fight against climate change. The absence of representatives from the Trump administration was seen as an opportunity to avoid sabotaging climate negotiations. Newsom acknowledged that he needs to find more effective ways to communicate about climate change to his public.
