The Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow has issued a warrant for the arrest in absentia of Garry Kasparov, world chess champion, accused of terrorism-related offenses, particularly for disseminating 'terrorist' content online. This crime can lead to a sentence of up to several years in prison in Russia. The in absentia arrest was approved on December 22, 2025, and the decision will come into effect on December 26.
Kasparov, who does not reside in Russia, is a vocal critic of Russian aggression in Ukraine. In the past, he has been involved in other accusations, including a 'violent takeover of power' alongside allied members of the Russian Anti-War Committee. Additionally, last year, a court in the Russian Republic of Komi arrested him in absentia for links to a 'terrorist community.'
