The CDU led by Friedrich Merz suffered an unexpected defeat in Baden-Württemberg, where the Greens, with candidate Cem Özdemir, won with 30.2%. Merz described the result as "bitter" and emphasized the need to regain voters' trust through reforms.

Özdemir, who could become the first premier from the Turkish community in Germany, wishes to continue the coalition with the CDU. At the same time, the far-right AfD party obtained nearly 19%, highlighting concerns about deindustrialization. The CDU secured 29.7%, while the Social Democrats had a poor performance with 5.5%.

Merz faces challenges in revitalizing Germany's economy, and upcoming elections in other states could further complicate the situation. Political scientists warn that these results could lead to panic among traditional parties, facilitating the rise of the AfD.
