The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his irritation regarding the standing ovation received by American Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference.

In a political podcast, Merz mentioned that, although he was not present in the hall, he would have had difficulties standing in appreciation. He compared Rubio's speech to that of American Vice President JD Vance from last year, emphasizing that, although it was less confrontational, Rubio still represented a vision similar to that of President Trump.

Merz explained that the enthusiasm in the hall was generated by the presence of an American who addressed the participants as friends, stirring emotions, even though he was not impressed: "It would not have been enough for me, but evidently it was enough for those present in the hall."

Rubio advocated for the revitalization of the transatlantic partnership, but emphasized that this should be defined by the Trump administration.
