A French soldier, Corporal Arnaud Frion, died during an attack in the Erbil region of Iraq, announced President Emmanuel Macron on the social media platform X. Frion, who was part of the 7th Alpine Hunters Battalion, is the first French soldier killed since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East. Macron expressed condolences to his family and comrades, emphasizing that the attack against French forces engaged in the fight against Daesh is unacceptable. Following the attack, six soldiers were injured, and the pro-Iranian group Ashab al-Kahf threatened to target all French interests in Iraq. This situation further complicates the geopolitical context in the region, especially in light of the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
