French Prime Minister François Bayrou has proposed the abolition of Easter and Victoria Day to help the country's financial recovery in the face of €3.3 trillion public debt. He emphasized the need for a collective sacrifice, but the measure could arouse discontent among a population attached to the days off. Bayrou promised a tighter budget, with a €43.8 billion cut to bring the budget deficit down to 4.6% of GDP.
