A group of sleep specialists, along with former French Minister of Education, Anne Genetet, has launched a call in Le Monde for classes in middle and high school to start at 9:00 AM. They argue that during puberty, adolescents' circadian rhythm changes, and their internal biological clock shifts by one to three hours. This change makes it difficult for students to concentrate and use their memory when classes start too early.

Studies in France show that starting classes at 9:00 AM improves sleep, alertness, and reduces anxiety. Researchers emphasize that this change does not lead to students going to bed later, but rather to an adjustment of the wake-up time. The authors of the initiative believe that adapting the school schedule to the biological rhythm of adolescents should be a priority in educational policies, having the potential to positively influence the health and academic performance of young people. This discussion takes place in a global context where the impact of the school schedule on mental health and learning capacity of adolescents is being analyzed.
