François Legault, the founder and leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), announced today his resignation from the position of premier, stating that it was the greatest honor of his life. Although many party members anticipated this departure, Legault had previously maintained that he would remain in office and run again in 2026, his decision being influenced by his health and the support of the population. Recent polls have shown a collapse in support for the CAQ, with the party reaching a historic low of just 11% in voting intentions.
Legault founded the CAQ in 2011, a party that won the elections in 2018 and 2022, forming majority governments. His resignation will require the appointment of a new leader, and Legault will remain in office until this is appointed. In the context of the provincial elections scheduled for 2026, it is unlikely that the new leader will call for early elections, considering the CAQ's poor showing in the polls.
