Former French President François Hollande has said he could run in the presidential election in spring 2027, but only if he identifies a realistic chance of reaching the second round and winning the election. He made the statement in an interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica, published on Monday.
Hollande, 72, said such a decision could not be taken lightly, especially in the case of a former head of state. He said he would consider running only in exceptional circumstances, depending on developments on the political scene and electoral prospects.
The former Socialist president led France from 2012 to 2017. His remarks come amid a political context dominated by the far right and a fragmented electorate. According to a poll published two weeks ago, Marine Le Pen remains in first place in scenarios for the first round, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon occupies second place in most variants.
Edouard Philippe, Emmanuel Macron’s former prime minister, is the only centre-right candidate to surpass Mélenchon in one of the scenarios analyzed. Hollande warned that France in 2027 will be different from the country he governed, in a more dangerous world and amid an existential crisis for Europe.
