The French Parliament recently adopted, unanimously, a bill that exempts women convicted for abortion before its legalization in 1975. This decision is considered a milestone for reproductive rights, being welcomed by feminist organizations. Between 1870 and 1975, over 11,660 people were convicted for abortion, and the law recognizes that the application of previous legislation constituted a violation of women's rights and led to considerable suffering.

Although the law does not provide for compensation, a commission will be established to collect testimonies from affected women. This initiative underscores France's commitment to women's rights, in a context where abortion remains a controversial subject in many countries. France has also become the first country to include the right to abortion in its Constitution, thus strengthening the protection of this right.
