At the end of a UN ministerial conference, France, Canada, Australia and 12 other countries launched a collective call for the recognition of a Palestinian state. French minister Jean-Noël Barrot underlined his desire to encourage countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to take that step. The signatories include countries that have not recognized Palestine but express a positive will to do so. The call comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with France announcing it will formally recognize Palestine in September.
