On Friday, in Washington, Israel, Lebanon, and the United States signed a framework agreement, announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aimed at opening a path towards lasting peace and security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the Israeli army will remain in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah lays down its arms, but will allow the Lebanese army to take control of certain pilot areas. Hezbollah has rejected disarmament and demanded the unconditional withdrawal of Israel. Direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, mediated by the U.S., began in April, and the Lebanese government has excluded Iran's involvement in the discussions. Recently, the U.S. and Israel launched attacks against Hezbollah, and Iran has called for their cessation as part of the negotiations for a final agreement.
