Jorge Glas was found guilty of embezzling public funds for reconstruction after the 2016 earthquake and sentenced to 13 years in prison. The court emphasized that the money was diverted to unjustified projects, ignoring the needs of victims. In addition to the prison sentence, Glas was fined $28,800 and banned from holding public office. He is already serving other sentences for corruption and was detained in 2024 after a controversial raid on the Mexican embassy, where he had been granted political asylum.
