Laura Dahlmeier, a successful German biathlete, was pronounced dead after she was caught in a rock avalanche in the mountains of northern Pakistan. The 31-year-old was trapped at an altitude of 5,700 meters while climbing Laila peak. Her partner managed to descend and summon help, but difficult weather conditions prevented her rescue. Dahlmeier won two Olympic gold medals in 2018 and was an experienced climber with multiple successful expeditions before the tragedy.
