Peter Mandelson, former British ambassador to the USA, was arrested on Monday in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following revelations about his connections with Jeffrey Epstein. His arrest has caused a major political scandal in the UK, leading to resignations in Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government and calls for transparency in public appointments.

Mandelson, at the age of 72, was dismissed from his position as ambassador in September 2025, after details about his friendship with Epstein came to light. Recently, emails released by the US Department of Justice showed that their relationship was closer than previously thought, including exchanges of sensitive information.

Pressure on Prime Minister Starmer has increased, as he has been criticized for appointing Mandelson in 2024, whom he accused of lying about his connections with Epstein. Two government officials have resigned, and parliament has called for the release of vetting documents for Mandelson. The Liberal Democrats have announced a motion to force the publication of these documents. Mandelson, known for his turbulent career, was the architect of the New Labour project and has resigned twice from the cabinet. A conviction for misconduct in public office can lead to life imprisonment.
