European airlines are taking advantage of the fuel price crisis to request legislative changes from the authorities in the United Kingdom and Brussels. Lobby groups are calling for the repeal of regulations that allow two free carry-on bags, impose environmental taxes, and establish strict compensation rules for canceled flights. Wizz Air's CEO, József Váradi, stated that the current rules are "politically motivated" and should be suspended to help carriers cope with rising fuel costs. EasyJet and Lufthansa have reported massive losses and flight cancellations due to these costs. Among the requested changes is the possibility for passengers to carry a second free carry-on bag and temporary adjustments to EU refueling rules. Although European officials are reluctant to revise the legislation, there is willingness for temporary concessions, considering the economic impact on tourism.
