Eurostat data show that in May 2025, the EU had a surplus of €13.1 billion in trade in goods, compared with €8.9 billion in May 2024. Exports rose slightly and imports fell, leading to an improvement in the balance. The increase in the surplus in the chemicals sector and the reduction in the energy deficit contributed significantly to this development. However, there were declines in other categories such as machinery and vehicles. From January to May 2025, the total surplus was €72 billion, similar to last year.
