In Brussels, the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union began the second day of the summit, having on the agenda discussions about the future multiannual budget of the community bloc. The European Commission's proposal provides for a budget of approximately 2 trillion euros for the next seven years. Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council, proposed a moderate reduction of 2%, equivalent to 32.8 billion euros, considered sufficient by the states that wish to maintain funding for agriculture and cohesion.

In contrast, the group of 'modernizing' states believes that this reduction is too small, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the proposed budget is 'clearly too large'. The pressure for a quick agreement is increasing, considering the scheduled elections in France and Poland. Meanwhile, EU leaders have called for accelerating measures to reduce energy prices and support the transition to a greener economy. The European Central Bank has raised interest rates to combat inflation, which is not expected to return to the 2% target before 2027.
