Friday's talks in Geneva between EU ministers and their Iranian counterpart come in response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East sparked by Israel's attacks on Iran. The aim of the meeting is to persuade Iran to use its nuclear program for civilian purposes only, in coordination with the US. The German chancellor has backed Israel's attacks, provoking harsh reactions from Tehran, and the German foreign minister has urged Iran to take part in negotiations to resolve the crisis.
