Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he supports a two-state solution for Cyprus, stressing the need for the international community to recognize the division of the island, which took place after the Turkish invasion in 1974. He called for the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and called for an end to its isolation. His visit to northern Nicosia coincides with recent talks between Cypriot leaders, seen as a constructive step towards the resumption of reunification talks.
