Erdogan made the remarks in an interview with Newsweek magazine during the NATO summit in Washington. He called for sanctions against Israel and criticized the US administration for supporting Israel despite violations of international law. Turkey, a NATO member, denounced Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip and expressed support for Hamas.
