The electric grid of Cuba collapsed on Saturday evening, leaving the entire country without power for the third time in March, amid a severe energy crisis.
The state company Cuban Electric Union announced a total power outage, without providing details about the causes, but intervention teams are working to restore supply. Power outages have become frequent in the last two years due to outdated infrastructure and a lack of fuel, with daily blackouts lasting up to 12 hours. The crisis affects the daily lives of Cubans, reducing work hours and complicating cooking.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the island has not received oil from external suppliers for three months, and Cuba produces less than 40% of its fuel needs. The Cuban government blames restrictions imposed by the United States, which condition the easing of sanctions on political and economic reforms.
