The Ecuadorean government has extradited Adolfo Macías, alias 'Fito', the country's biggest drug trafficker, to the United States after his arrest in June 2023. Accused by US prosecutors of cocaine and arms trafficking, 'Fito' has been described as a ruthless leader of a violent criminal organization. He becomes the first Ecuadorean to be extradited after the procedure was reinstated in 2024, a measure backed by President Daniel Noboa. 'Fito' is linked to the assassination of a presidential candidate in 2023.
