The death toll from the shipwreck near Djibouti has reached 139, following confirmation of 30 additional deaths compared with the figures initially announced. Approximately 82 people survived, while search and rescue operations continue.
The boat was carrying 305 migrants attempting to reach Yemen. The vessel capsized during the night of October 8–9, near the town of Guhere, north of the port city of Obock. According to Reuters, the migrants intended to continue their journey to the Gulf states, despite the conflict in Yemen.
Teams from the local authorities and the International Organization for Migration are operating at the scene. Survivors are receiving medical care, food, and temporary shelter, while funerals are being organized for the victims. Images distributed by IOM show sandals and sports shoes washed ashore by the waves.
Alexandre Coissac, head of the IOM mission in Djibouti, said that the organization’s teams are supporting the authorities in emergency operations.
From January 1 to October 1, 2026, IOM recorded approximately 178,000 arrivals in Djibouti, most of them Ethiopian and Somali nationals.
