Two wildfires broke out almost simultaneously on Sunday on the island of Salamina, located near Athens, causing the death of two people and the evacuation of hundreds. The fires ignited in the popular areas of Peristeria and Selinia, and the rapid intervention of the authorities was essential to prevent the spread of the flames into inhabited areas.
The spokesperson for the firefighters confirmed the recovery of two bodies in the area of Peristeria beach, and nine people required medical attention due to burns. The Ministry of Civil Protection issued four evacuation orders, mobilizing approximately 200 firefighters, 50 fire engines, six planes, and seven helicopters. The Hellenic Coast Guard intervened with seven patrol boats, and approximately 90 people were evacuated by sea.
