Forest fires in Portugal have mobilized almost 2,700 firefighters and a state of high alert has been declared across the country. The worst outbreaks are in the center and north of the country, including a major blaze in Arouca, where 750 firefighters are battling for control. The Ponte da Barca fire has forced the evacuation of people and burned almost 2,000 hectares. Authorities warn that the fires could escalate because of the heat, with climate change intensifying the fires.
