Around 1:00 AM, a devastating fire broke out in a dormitory of the Utumishi school in Nakuru, located 120 kilometers from Nairobi. The flames spread rapidly, and response teams were mobilized to control the fire and evacuate the other students from the campus. According to the preliminary report, at least 15 children lost their lives, and the number of injured is still unknown, according to local authorities.
The police chief, Masoud Mwinyi, described the situation as "painful and sad." Kenya has experienced similar tragedies in the past, the worst incident occurring in 2001, when 67 students died in a boarding school in Machakos. Additionally, in 2024, another fire led to the deaths of 21 students, prompting authorities to declare three days of national mourning.
