The Pentagon wants to lay off 5,400 probationary employees as part of efforts to reduce the civilian workforce.

The job cuts are part of efforts to streamline and refocus the department, according to a senior Pentagon official. The layoffs mostly target employees with poor ratings, and the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, is working to identify programs deemed to be outside the department's mission focus.
