On Saturday, two cooling towers of the decommissioned Gundremmingen Nuclear Power Plant in Bavaria were demolished with explosives, as part of a controlled operation, according to Euronews.
This plant had been a symbol of the city for nearly 60 years, generating jobs and boosting the local economy.
The demolition was part of Germany's energy transition, which led to the closure of the Gundremmingen, Brokdorf, and Grohnde nuclear power plants in 2021.
Although the closure of the plant was a difficult decision, thousands of people gathered to witness the demolition. The municipality prepared restricted access areas, and the demolition was visible from various observation points.
The operation included three explosions, the first serving to disperse wildlife, while the last two destroyed the two 160-meter towers.
Approximately 56,000 tons of concrete collapsed in a few seconds. The process of dismantling the plant will continue until 2040.
