Delcy Rodriguez, the president of Venezuela, asked Donald Trump on Thursday to lift the "blockade and sanctions" against her country, shortly after the capture of Nicolás Maduro in an American military operation. Rodriguez, who took power in January, has held meetings with high-ranking American officials, including the CIA director and the U.S. Secretary of Energy, marking a shift in relations between Caracas and Washington. In her speech, she emphasized that the embargo on Venezuelan oil, imposed since 2019, must end. Although the U.S. has begun issuing licenses for multinational companies, the process of reforming the oil sector in Venezuela and releasing political prisoners is progressing slowly, with over 560 prisoners still in jail, according to the NGO Foro Penal. Rodriguez proposed a new cooperation program with the United States, highlighting the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
