Cliff Benson, a conservationist and founder of the organization Sea Trust Wales, stated that the incident could be linked to a fishing boat that discarded dead fish overboard in an attempt to catch more valuable commercial species. He also mentioned that marine pollution could be another cause, although it would affect multiple species, not just dogfish.

The World Wildlife Fund highlights the dangers of abandoned nets, known as "ghost nets," which kill millions of marine creatures each year. These nets can capture an impressive number of species, and estimates suggest that up to a million tons of such equipment end up in the world's oceans each year. Recent findings are not unique; in the past, similar cases have been reported on the beaches of Wales, including Prestatyn and Cold Knap, where fish with hooks and fishing gear attached were found. A fishing specialist suggested that these incidents are likely the result of bottom fishing activities.
