The anti-establishment lawyer supported by the United States, Abelardo de la Espriella, won the second round of the presidential elections in Colombia on Sunday. Preliminary official results show that he obtained 49.7% of the votes, surpassing Ivan Cepeda (48.7%).
The elected president will take office as president of Colombia on August 7 for a four-year term. Approximately 41 million voters were called to the polls for these crucial elections, which took place against the backdrop of a resurgence of violence in a country involved in an internal armed conflict for more than six decades.
