A large part of Cuba was left without electricity on Thursday, nearly a day after a massive blackout affected the western part of the island. This situation is attributed to a fragile electrical grid and a lack of fuel. Repair teams worked all night to fix a faulty boiler at one of the country's largest thermoelectric plants, but officials warn that full restoration of power could take between three and four days.

Nearly 297,000 customers in Havana, or 34% of the population, have electricity, including 37 hospitals and five water stations. The Electric Union of Cuba stated that the electrical system is operating 'at limited capacity', prioritizing essential services. Two generators are shut down due to a lack of oil, and the energy crisis has worsened in recent months due to sanctions and restrictions imposed by the United States.

The power outage on Wednesday is the second to affect western Cuba in the last three months, and the thermoelectric plants, many of which are over 30 years old, urgently need maintenance but cannot obtain new equipment due to sanctions.
