The cruise ship Hondius has been authorized to return to sea on Saturday, May 30, after undergoing a complete cleaning and disinfection, following a hantavirus outbreak that affected passengers on board.
The municipal health agency in Rotterdam announced that there are no longer any public health obstacles to the ship's return to service, following a final inspection conducted on Friday. The cruise line Oceanwide Expeditions confirmed that the ship will leave Rotterdam and will resume its cruise schedule on June 13.
The hantavirus outbreak led to the death of three passengers and the evacuation of others in Tenerife, and the ship had to interrupt its journey from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the Cape Verde archipelago. The World Health Organization has reported up to 13 confirmed or probable cases related to this incident.
