Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor who obtained arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Putin, has been dismissed by the member states.

The Assembly of the member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has dismissed prosecutor Karim Khan, the decision being approved by 82 of the 125 represented states, including the declared support of France, Norway, and the Netherlands.

Khan, at the age of 56, had been accused of sexual assault against a subordinate, allegations he denied. He had self-suspended in May 2025, and in June 2026 he was suspended again until the completion of the investigation. During his term, the prosecutor and other ICC officials were sanctioned by the U.S. after the opening of an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.

Karim Khan had been leading the ICC since 2021 and was noted for obtaining arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A lawyer specialized in Human Rights, he was the third chief prosecutor of the Court and previously played a significant role in UN investigations into atrocities committed by the Islamic State in Iraq, as well as in international tribunals for the crimes in the former Yugoslavia and the genocide in Rwanda.
