Abelardo de la Espriella, the elected president of Colombia, declared that starting from August 7, his administration will close 14 embassies, including the one in Romania, as part of a reorganization of the diplomatic network. In a speech on social media, De la Espriella mentioned that the embassies in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Hungary, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Senegal, and South Africa will also be closed. Although these measures do not involve breaking diplomatic relations with most of the affected countries, he emphasized that there will be no connection with Cuba and Nicaragua.

Colombian citizens in the respective countries will receive assistance through other diplomatic missions. De la Espriella also announced the reopening of the Embassy in Israel and the opening of a mission in Nigeria, as well as an audit of the other diplomatic representations to assess their efficiency. The saved resources will be directed towards sectors such as security, health, education, and infrastructure.
