CDU/CSU and SPD are facing record dissatisfaction from citizens, with 84% of Germans disappointed with the government's performance. After the first regional elections in 2025, the coalition was accused of inaction, despite the urgent need for reforms to revive the economy. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil are recording the lowest approval ratings, and the popularity of the parties has drastically decreased, with CDU/CSU reaching 26% and SPD at 12%. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is gaining ground, reaching 25%. Citizens are concerned about the recession and the impact of high energy prices, and 70% do not trust that the government will take effective measures. Reform proposals include tax cuts and investment incentives, but citizens are skeptical about fixed-term employment commitments. Additionally, 74% do not trust that social systems will become sustainable, and reform proposals in health and pensions are in the process of being developed. The majority of citizens support higher taxation on alcohol and tobacco, but reject higher co-payments for medications.
