The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced a new policy regarding the participation of female athletes, stating that only those who are biologically female, confirmed by a genetic test for the SRY gene, will be able to compete in the Olympic Games starting in 2028. This decision comes after an 18-month consultation and aims to protect the female category, following previous controversies related to the participation of transgender athletes.

The IOC emphasized that the presence of the SRY gene is a precise indicator of male sexual development. The new rules do not apply retroactively and do not affect mass sports. Exceptions will be made for rare cases of sexual development. This policy change was initiated by the new IOC president, Kirsty Coventry, who highlighted the importance of fairness and safety in competition.
