A spy operation conducted by Chinese secret services has been uncovered, aimed at obtaining sensitive information about the European Union and NATO. The Chinese Ministry of State Security recruited European personnel through fake profiles on LinkedIn, approaching dozens of employees from European institutions and NATO.
This operation led to the acquisition of a significant amount of important data, according to Belgian Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden. One of the fake profiles, under the name 'Kevin Zhang', claimed to be the head of a fictitious company in Hong Kong.
The spies initially requested paid reports, later asking for unpublished or classified information. Topics of interest included the sanctions imposed by the EU and NATO's strategy in Asia, particularly regarding Taiwan. This recruitment method highlights the risks of modern espionage, facilitated by social media platforms.
