China strongly protested after Czech President Petr Pavel's meeting with the Dalai Lama, which was seen as a challenge to its sovereignty. Beijing announced it was suspending all relations with Pavel, accusing him of violating political commitments to China. The meeting took place in India on a private trip and Pavel was invited by the Dalai Lama. Relations between the Czech Republic and China have deteriorated in recent years, especially after Pavel had a telephone conversation with Taiwan's leader.
