Bai Tianhui was the general manager of Huarong International Holdings, an important company in managing non-performing assets in China. The Tianjin court ruled that the bribery had a particularly harmful social impact, causing serious losses to state interests. Bai Tianhui exploited his position between 2014 and 2018 to illegally obtain money and assets. His execution is part of an extensive anti-corruption campaign in China, which has also targeted the financial industry.
In 2021, another former official, Lai Xiaomin, was executed for a bribe of 1.79 billion yuan. Amnesty International emphasizes that China is one of the countries that applies the death penalty.
