China's total electricity consumption exceeded 10,000 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 for the first time, reaching 10,360 billion kWh, more than twice that of the United States, according to data published by the National Energy Administration and reported by state media.
The annual growth was 5%, making China the first country in the world to reach this level of consumption, surpassing the combined total of the European Union, Russia, India, and Japan, with the main contributions coming from the industrial sector and services related to information technology and infrastructure for electric vehicles.
