China and Russia are discussing the possibility of organizing a summit between Presidents Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, which could take place between November 18 and 19 in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Beijing has not provided concrete details about the meeting, however, and has not officially confirmed that it will be held.
The information was presented by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a regular press conference. The statement came after Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that work to reach a consensus on the meeting was under way. Moscow hopes it will be completed in the coming days.
The idea of a meeting in this format was initially suggested by the Russian Foreign Ministry. Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to participate, while Beijing had not previously made public comments on the matter.
According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putin would like the summit to address Russia’s conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. The proposal was criticized by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Ukraine would not be included in the discussions. Trump said his priority would be negotiating a new nuclear arms reduction treaty between the United States, Russia and China.
