At its congress, the CDU, led by Chancellor Merz, proposed imposing a legal age limit of 14 years for the use of social networks, as well as introducing safety measures for adolescents up to 16 years old. The adopted motion calls on the federal government to address the digital protection needs for young people. The CDU also proposes sanctions for platforms that do not comply with these restrictions and harmonizing age standards at the European Union level. Germany thus joins other European states, such as Spain and France, which are considering similar restrictions. The initiative is supported by the Social Democratic Party, but its implementation is complicated by the German federal system, which divides responsibilities among regional authorities.
